Simon Hickman, Murals & Interiors
Established 1984
Simon Hickman began his career in the mid-1980s, a time when the revival of specialist paint effects was reshaping British interiors. With a background rooted in fine art painting rather than construction, Simon approached decorative finishes with a painterly eye—treating walls not as surfaces to be covered, but as compositions to be developed.
Based in London, his studio has evolved into a specialist practice known for its discretion, quality, and adaptability. Over the decades, Simon has worked on a diverse array of commissions, from restoring heritage trompe l'oeil in Grade I listed buildings to creating contemporary polished plaster installations for modern architectural homes.
His philosophy is simple: a decorative finish should never shout. It should sit comfortably within the architecture, enhancing the space with texture and depth without overwhelming the objects and lives that inhabit it. This understated approach has made him a trusted partner for some of the UK's leading interior designers and architects.
Today, Simon continues to work hands-on with every project. Whether it is a large-scale mural requiring scaffolding and weeks of preparation, or a delicate furniture finish, the commitment to craft remains the same.
How I Work
Every commission begins with understanding the building, the space, and the client's intent. My work is never off-the-shelf - finishes are developed specifically for each project, respecting both architecture and use.

Craft & Materials
I work primarily with traditional and specialist materials - lime plasters, mineral pigments, Venetian and polished plasters, metallics, and hand-mixed finishes. These materials age gracefully and develop character over time, offering depth and authenticity that modern coatings cannot replicate. Each finish is tested, adjusted, and applied by hand to suit the space it inhabits.

Architecture & Heritage
A strong respect for architecture underpins my work. Whether working within period properties or contemporary spaces, I consider proportion, light and historical context before any finish is applied. My trompe l'oeil, restoration, and decorative work is informed by traditional techniques and research, ensuring new work feels appropriate, balanced, and integrated - never imposed.

Artistic Judgement
Beyond technique lies artistic judgement. Composition, tone, colour balance and restraint play a critical role in achieving a successful finish. From murals and illusionistic painting to canvas commissions, every piece is approached with the same intent: to enhance the space rather than dominate it, and to create work that remains relevant and timeless.
The Process
From Concept to Creation
Consultation & Sampling
We begin by understanding the space and the light. Bespoke sample boards can be requested during the consultation to help visualise the finish.
Site Preparation
Meticulous preparation is the foundation of a lasting finish. We protect all surrounding surfaces and prepare substrates to the highest standard to ensure durability.
Execution
Work is carried out efficiently and cleanly. Whether working in a private residence or a commercial site, we operate with minimal disruption and absolute discretion.
